History
The Cavachon is a relatively new dog breed that originated in the United States in 1966, when a champion Cavalier King Charles male was bred with a Bichon Frise female by Century Farm Puppies in Iowa. Since then, the popularity of this breed has risen tremendously. As it is a hybrid, it is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). However, it is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Appearance
Physical attributes
This breed borrows traits from both its parents in terms of appearance. For starters, its beautiful, big, and deep eyes come from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. So do its ears, which are long and touch its cheeks. Like both the parents, its muzzle and head are small. It has a long tail.
Coat
This breed has a fluffy coat, which is wavy, soft, and silky. The undercoat is dense, while the upper coat is soft. The coat sheds very less, a trait typical of the Bichon Frise. It comes in a wide variety of colors like white, black and tan, apricot, peach, sable, red, and even tri-color. The coat needs to be groomed regularly as it grows quite long―3 to 5 inches on an average!
Height and Weight
This small breed is a lapdog. Its average height is between 12 to 16 inches, and it can weigh anywhere between 10 to 20 pounds. Some may weigh higher or lower than this range, but that depends on the individual dog. There is also a toy version of this breed. The size also depends on whether your pup is a first-generation Cavachon, Cavalier King Charles to Bichon bred, or a second-generation Cavachon, Cavachon to Cavachon bred. The latter will be smaller than the former.
Temperament
The Cavachon absolutely loves playing. But don't worry, it loves sleeping even more. This is more like a "play hard, sleep harder" kind of breed. When it comes to sleeping, this dog has its preference (doesn't everyone?). It loves to cuddle and sleep in someone's lap! This is a people-loving breed, and it can experience separation anxiety if left alone for too long. The advantage of its small size is that you can take it with you when you head out.

This dog has a lot of love to give. It is also very friendly, social, outgoing, playful, and loyal. It inherits these personality traits from both the parents. It gets along quite well with children and loves to meet other beings, both two- and four-legged. It is a downright hopeless guard dog and does not know the meaning of aggression. It is very gentle and sweet and loves its family to bits. However, it is a good watchdog as it barks at anything out of the ordinary. It makes an excellent companion, and it is just as good for people who are always on the move as it is for retirees.
Diet and Exercise
This is a lively, bouncy, and active breed. However, it does not need a lot of exercise. Daily moderate physical activity is sufficient, like a short walk or a game of fetch (they love chasing things). This dog does well in small apartments. It is just as happy indoors as it is outdoors. However, keep in mind that if you have a yard, do not let your dog out to play unsupervised. Also, remember that it must always be inside the house in cold weather. A plus point of this breed is that it does not need someone to play with it constantly, as it is quite adept at keeping itself occupied.

This dog is a moderate eater. Hence, no big meals are allowed at one time. Instead, spread out its meals in two or three installments, and feed it small amounts of food each time. The Cavachon loves treats, and it will sit in front of you while you are eating, unleashing the irresistible charm of its big eyes, which will guilt you into giving it a piece or two. But do not fall for these tricks, as this breed is prone to obesity if overfed, which further leads to health problems.
Training
For any dog breed, training is important. The Cavachon is a fast learner, and it is always eager to please its owners. Thus, training becomes an enjoyable activity. However, remember to always be kind, firm, gentle, and consistent in the training. Make sure your dog knows you are the boss, but never yell, hit, or punish it. Positive reinforcement works wonders, and giving treats when your dog follows a command is helpful. House training this breed is not difficult, but if it is unsuccessful, then crate training can also be used.
Grooming
The good thing about this dog's fur is that it sheds very little; hence, it proves good for people who are allergic. But on the flip side, grooming and brushing are two very important aspects that need to be carried out regularly. As the fur grows quite fast, it needs to be clipped as frequently as every 6 to 8 weeks. Brushing must be done at least 3 to 4 times a week, and the undercoat must be brushed thoroughly. Bathing also cannot be conducted on an as-needed basis, and must be undertaken at least once a month. The ears must also be kept clean and dry to prevent ear infections, and nails must be clipped regularly.
Health
Although mix breeds are considered healthier because they take the strongest traits of both the parent breeds, they still have their fair share of health problems. Some of the common health problems that the Cavachon inherits from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise are hip dysplasia, heart murmur, congestive heart failure, ear infections, eye problems, liver problems, and autoimmune diseases. Your puppy will be at a risk of contracting any genetic diseases that its parents have. The lifespan of a healthy Cavachon is 15 to 18 years.
The Cavachon is an understanding and unconditionally accepting dog that will love you come what may. All it wants in return is your attention, and some assurance that it is loved just as much. All in all, it makes for an excellent pet.
