Best Tips to Play Lawn Bowls

Whether it's called bocce, bowling on the green or lawn bowls, the lawn game can trace its origins to a game called skittles that was played by Egyptians. Lawn bowling has followed the same set of rules since its first recorded matches in the 13th century. While there have been minor variations in equipment and protocol, game lawn bowling has remained largely uniform throughout the world.

Learn the rules of the game. To begin a game, one player throws a small white target ball called the "jack" at least 75 feet out into the rink. Players then take turns throwing and rolling the larger shooting ball, known as bowls, at the jack. The player with the bowl closest to the jack at the end of the round scores one point for each bowl that's closer to the jack than the opponent's nearest bowl. Games can be played to a certain number of points or over a predetermined number of rounds.

Divide into two even teams. You can play one on one or two on two. Flip a coin to see who goes first. Whoever wins the coin toss gets to deliver the jack to begin play. A player must have one foot on the mat to deliver his jack. The jack is centered in the rink and the player who delivered then gets first shot.

Take aim, accounting for the weight of the bowl and the terrain of the field, and shoot. All lawn bowls are biased, meaning one side is rounded more than the other. This makes the bowl roll to one side, inward or outward, as it moves along the field. You may loft your shot, roll it and apply spin. If a competitor's bowl is nearest the jack, aim for it. Knocking the other bowls out of the way is part of the game.

Score your rounds. The player with the bowl closest to the jack after everyone has shot is eligible to score. Tally the points as you go along. If you're playing to a score, the first player to reach it wins. If you're playing a number of rounds, the player with the highest score at the end of those rounds is the winner.
