Cuckoo Clock arts for Kids

A cuckoo clock’s regular melodious chimes and schedule appearances of a little birdie can be intriguing to even the youngest observer. Instead of letting your child play with the real clock on the wall, you can let her create her own cuckoo clock craft. Your child is sure to go coo-coo for craft time.

Paper Clock
A basic cuckoo clock can be created out of paper. Grab a piece of 11-by-14-inch brown construction paper. Draw an “I” shape on the upper part of the paper for the door of the cuckoo clock and cut along those lines. Ask your child to draw a bird on an 8-by-11-inch piece of white paper. Tape this bird picture behind the door flaps, so when your child opens the flaps, she can see the bird. Have her draw a circle below the flaps and number it like a clock. For the clock hands, cut two arrows out of construction paper and attach it to the drawn clock with a brass brad. Now your child can play peek-a-boo with the bird and move the arms on the clock.

Wooden Clock
Your child can transform a birdhouse into a sturdy cuckoo clock craft. Find a plain wooden craft birdhouse to be used as the cuckoo clock base. Let your child decorate the wood with non-toxic acrylic paint and ask her to include a clock in her decorations. Use tacky glue to attach two googly eyes and a small foam triangle for the beak to a pom pom to make the bird for your clock. Once the paint is dry, glue the bird onto the birdhouse perch with the tacky glue.

Milk Carton Clock
Wrap a clean, empty milk carton in white construction paper and secure the paper with tape. Ask your child to decorate the carton to make it look like a cuckoo clock. Cut an “I” out of the upper middle part of the milk carton. Fold the flaps open to create creases for the clock doors. Cut a 1-inch long slit in the back of the milk carton, directly behind the area where you cut the door. Locate a premade bird from a craft store or thrift store or create one out of a pom pom and googly eyes. Use tacky glue to attach the bird to the end of a craft stick. Once the glue is dry, insert the other end of the craft stick into the slit you cut in the carton, so you can push the bird in and out of the clock doors. Have your child make the cuckoo clock chime noises and push the birdie out of the carton and then back in. Close the flaps when she is done.

Craft and Activity
You can tie in a cuckoo clock craft with a dramatic play activity. Acquire a large cardboard box, preferably a refrigerator box. Stand the box upright with box flaps on the top or bottom. Cut flaps for the clock doors that are big enough for your child to open and who her face and upper body. As you gather the supplies for your child’s bird dress up, have him decorate the outside of the box with markers, including numbers and clock arms. Offer your child a mask with a bird beak, a headband with feathers glue on it and a brown velvet, fleece or fuzzy shirt and pants. If you can’t find the mask and headband, use face paint to transform her into a bird. Help your child climb into the box so she can pretend to be the bird in the cuckoo clock.
