Family Fun Project for Preschoolers

Engaging in family activities during your preschooler's early learning years will help him develop positive self-esteem and confidence in trying new things. Additionally, fun projects and crafts that focus on family life will strengthen the loving bond you have with your child and nurture creativity and imagination.

Family Collage
A collage is a collection of items such as photographs, images or stickers randomly arranged on a background to make a work of art. To create your collage, use a piece of poster board as a canvas. Gather paper, pictures from magazines and photos that represent your family. Attach the materials to the poster board by taking turns using a glue stick. Discuss each photo together by asking your child why it is special to him. When your creation is finished, place it in a sturdy frame to hang on display.

All About Us
Release your inner author by creating a best-selling book about your family. Help your child interview each family member. Encourage him to ask questions such as "What is your favorite color?" or "Where did you go to school?" Write the answers on a piece of paper and provide your child with crayons to illustrate each page with colorful artwork. To bind the pages together, use a hole-punch to create a hole in the upper right-hand corner of the pages. String a piece of yarn through the hole and tie it in a bow. Encourage your child to display it on a bookshelf or coffee table so you can enjoy it during family time.

Portraits
Drawing is an important part of your child's physical, emotional and cognitive development. Help your child practice his artistic skills by asking him to trace the outline of each family member on a long piece of butcher paper. Spend time adding detail to each portrait using paint, crayons, yarn, glitter and stickers. Take a picture of each person standing next to their outline and attach the photograph to the project. To store the portraits, roll them up carefully and secure the tube with a rubber band. This is a great project to do as a family once a year.

Family Tree
Family relationships can be a difficult concept for preschoolers to grasp. Anything beyond mommy, daddy, grandma and grandpa can seem confusing and overwhelming to a young child. Creating a family tree is a great way to teach your child about his family and its history. Draw a large tree trunk (labeled with your last name) on a piece of bulletin board. Involve your child in gathering photos, names and other family information to add to the tree. Use each tree branch to show your child the relationship between members of your family. Encourage him to color the tree and the scenery around it as you work. The tree does not have to branch out very far at first, but this does not have to be a project with a deadline. You can continue adding to it over the years. You may find that the experience brings your family closer together and will be passed on to future generations.
