Pack Golf Clubs for Air Travel

Whether you’re bringing your clubs with you to the airport or shipping them in advance, careful packing helps ensure your clubs aren’t damaged in transit. In addition to making sure you have what you need to play at your destination, two factors to consider are how best to protect your clubs from getting damaged, and how to make sure you don’t run afoul of airline baggage rules.

Inside the Case
Transportation Security Administration rules prohibit carrying on golf clubs, so pack knowing they'll be placed in the cargo hold. Hard cases work better than soft cases, as they provide better protection. In fact, airlines typically require you to sign a waiver if you don't use a hard case. Cover your clubs with head covers if you have them. Use golf towels, rain covers or a windbreaker as extra padding between the sticks. If using a soft case, pay particular attention to keeping your clubs separated, shaking the case gently before zipping it up to confirm the clubheads aren't banging against each other.

Watch the Weight
Airlines have weight restrictions on baggage, and charge extra when they exceed the posted limits. Check before you leave the house to make sure your bag isn't too heavy. If you’re close to the line, leave golf balls or other items you can easily find at your destination behind. Leaving extra space in your other baggage also allows you to do some quick repacking if necessary.
