Thanksgiving Crafts to Make for Kids

Crafts and interactive activities are an ideal way to teach your children the importance of certain holidays. Show your kids that Thanksgiving means more than a large, delicious meal by making some placemats with them that feature common symbols of the holiday, along with personal touches that will give this time of year more sentimental value for your family.

Turkey Placemat
Print or draw an image of a turkey (see References), and cut the excess from around the turkey after your children color the images in the colors they like best. Give your kids pencils and construction paper in colors like orange, red, and brown so they can trace the image of their hands onto the paper. Cut the hand shapes from the paper and use a glue stick to help your kids position the "hands" around the turkey cutout to resemble feathers. Place the "feathered" turkey on a large sheet of construction paper or poster board in an autumn color, and cover the placemat with Con-Tact paper for a placemat your little ones can use for the next few years.

Fabric Placemat
Choose fabric that has already been shaped for placemat use, or select the fabric in the texture or color your kids like and cut the fabric accordingly. Purchase border materials for the placemats as well, such as gold satin ribbon to match a brown cotton placemat, and sew the border onto the placemat. Select Thanksgiving-themed patches that can be ironed or hot-glued onto the fabric, like images of turkeys or cornucopias, and help your children attach the patches to the placemat. Let your children select their favorite colors of fabric paint to paint words that remind them of Thanksgiving on the mats, like "family," "together," "fun" or "food," to further customize the mats.

Thanksgiving Collage Placemat
Use large, sturdy poster board pieces to create collage placemats with your kids. Take out a few old magazines and pairs of child-safe scissors so you can all cut out photos of favorite Thanksgiving food items, as well as pictures of families, children and images of turkeys or autumn leaves. Give each child a glue stick to attach the magazine cutout items to the poster board, along with some Thanksgiving stickers and spray glitter in bronze or yellow to give the mats more visual appeal. Use puff paint to add each child's name to her placemat, and cover the crafts with Con-Tact paper.

Autumn Leaves Placemat
Use solid-color fabric placemats for this craft; add synthetic autumn leaves to the mat for a Thanksgiving table decoration that is kid-friendly, but has an air of sophistication. Accent the leaves with gold or bronze spray paint or glitter, or allow your children to paint the leaves with stripes or polka dots. Let your kids place the leaves where they want on the mat. For example, they could put a cluster of leaves in the corner of the mat, or a border of leaves all around the placemat. Use stencils to personalize the mats; give each child a stencil of her initial and some paint to decorate the mat. Use a fabric protector on the place mats to protect the decor and make the crafts long-lasting.
