Tips to Make Child's Headpiece

Many kids love to dress up in costume from head-to-toe and let their imagination go wild. Whether your child needs a headpiece for a school performance, Halloween costume or simply to play dress-up on a rainy afternoon, creating a custom design is a task that can be done with materials from around the house. Helping your child come up with ideas about decorating can give your child plenty of ideas to start your project.

Start with a U-shaped headband that fits comfortably on your child’s head. Use a wide band to create a sturdier base if you are making a large or heavy headpiece. Avoid using soft fabric headbands that are not sturdy.

Trace the outline of the headband onto a piece of colored decorative paper and cut it out with scissors. Cover one side of the cut paper with nontoxic school glue and smooth it on to the headband. Press out any air bubbles. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Attach decorative flowers or feathers to the headband with a hot glue gun. Glue a rhinestone to the center of each flower to add a sparkly touch. Affix pieces of curly ribbon around each end of the headband to add length to the headpiece.

Feather Comb
Gather a cluster of feathers in your hand and group all of the quills together. Spread out the tops of the feathers in the shape of a bouquet.

Wrap sewing thread around the stems of the feathers, starting at the bottom, to keep them firmly together. Tie the thread when the stems are secure. Cut off any excess thread with scissors. Use a thread that is the same color as the stems to help it blend in better.

Place the feather quills along the edge of a hair comb in the desired location. Wrap sewing thread around the feathers and the hair comb to fasten the feathers to the comb. Wrap the stems several times to ensure that the feathers are secure. Tie a knot and trim the excess thread with scissors.
