Google offers a free Voice over IP, or VoIP, service called Google Voice that lets you make and receive voice calls and send SMS text messages. You can integrate Google Voice services with your Gmail account and make calls directly from within Gmail with a microphone or headset. Calls to the United States and Canada are free, but there's a per-minute charge for voice calls to other countries. Add credit in $10 increments through Google Checkout to pay for per-minute calls.
Open your Web browser and go to Gmail.com. If you do not have the Google Voice plugin installed in your Gmail account, go to the Google Voice page and click "Try it Now" to install the plugin (see Resources).
Click "Call Phone" in the Chat panel. Click your credit balance in the Call window that pops up to open a drop-down menu. Click "Add Credit."
Click "Add $10 Credit." Sign into your Google account. Enter your credit card information; if your Google account does not have a credit card on file, click the "Terms of Service" check box, then click "Save and Continue." Click "Complete Your Purchase - $10.00."
