Adding SMS to Gmail

Google's online email service, Gmail, has an experimental "Gmail Labs" feature that allows you to add SMS messaging to your Gmail account. Using this feature, you can send and receive text messages from the chat window inside your Gmail inbox. This add-on is useful for those who would rather text message with a full keyboard rather than with a phone, or for those who want Gmail to store an online archive of the SMS conversation. You can learn how to enable the SMS feature inside Gmail by following a few steps.

Visit the Gmail website at Gmail.com and sign into your account.

Click the gear icon at the top right-hand corner of the screen and select the "Mail settings" option.

Open the Gmail Labs window by clicking the "Labs" link in the Gmail settings menu bar.

Scroll down the list of Labs options and click the "Enable" radio button for both "SMS (text messaging) in Chat" and "SMS in Chat gadget."

Click the "Save Changes" button at the top of the screen. You now have a "Send SMS" widget in the left sidebar of your Gmail inbox. Please note that you cannot receive a text message from someone you haven't texted using this widget.
