Avoid Spoofing for Gmail

You can become the victim of a spoofing attack at any time, and unfortunately, you may not know until the damage is done. Spammers and other cyber-criminals can send mail that appears to come from your account by forging the "sender field." This can put you in the awkward position of having to explain to family and friends that you, too, are a victim. Fortunately, there a few steps that you can take today to help prevent this from occurring.

Log in to your Gmail account by navigating to "www.gmail.com," entering the required information and clicking "Sign In."

Click the gear-shaped icon in the upper-right hand side of the page and then click "Mail Settings." Click the blue "Accounts" link at the top of the page and then click "Change Password."

Enter your current password in the space provided, followed by the new, stronger password. Select a new password that contains letters, numbers and symbols. Choose random words or words that have no significance to you and include at least one upper-case letter. Change your password often. Enter the new password a second time in the "Confirm New Password" box. Click "Save."

Click the blue "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" link at the top of the "Mail Settings" page. Click the radio button to the left of "Disable Forwarding" and then click the gray "Save Changes" button.

Click the blue "General" link and then point your mouse cursor to the "Browser Connection" entry. Click the radio button to the left of the "Always use https" option. Scroll to the bottom of the page and then click "Save Changes." Forcing Gmail to use an "https" connection will help keep you protected when you are connecting from a public network.

Ensure that your operating system is up to date and that you have adequate anti-malware software. Operating systems that are out of date can not protect you from any vulnerabilities that cybercriminals may discover.
