If you receive a high volume of email, it can be difficult to keep track of all your messages. Combing through archived email in search of one particular message can be a frustrating waste of time. Gmail's integrated search function allows you to instantly sort your mail by a particular keyword, subject or sender. The search results replace the inbox contents that are normally found in the main panel. If you are done going through your search results and want to return to your other mail, there are several ways to get things back to normal.
Click on the link for your Inbox, Contacts, Sent messages or one of your labels. Once another category is loaded, the search results within the main panel will disappear.
Start a new search. Type a different phrase into the search field and press "Search Mail." Your initial search will be replaced.
Check the master checkbox in the top-left corner of the main panel to select all of the search results. Click the "Delete" button at the top of the menu. This should only be done if your search was for items that you no longer want to keep record of.
