Gmail messages are automatically saved indefinitely. However, you can easily get rid of an older message that you don't need anymore. When you delete a sent message, it is no longer accessible from your account. Know, however, that deleting a sent message from your end does not delete the recipient's copy.
Conversation Threads
A conversation thread contains the back-and-forth messages between two or more email addresses. When you delete an entire conversation, not only are your own sent messages in the thread deleted, but any responses you received are also removed from your account. Don't assume that just because a message is in the "Sent" folder there were no incoming responses -- any message you send out is put in the "Sent" folder, even if incoming responses are attached. Look for a white "Inbox" icon next to the message as an indicator of whether incoming messages are attached to the thread. Delete an entire thread by checking the box next to the conversation and choosing "Delete" from the toolbar.
Single Messages
You don't have to remove an entire conversation thread to get rid of a sent message. Delete a single sent message to keep the surrounding messages for your records. For instance, if you have a conversation with 10 back-and-forth messages, deleting the sent message that initiated the thread will not remove the other nine messages. Delete a single message by opening the conversation thread, clicking the tab of the single message and then the arrow to the right of the "Reply" link. Choose "Delete this message" from the menu.
Views
Once you delete a conversation thread or a single sent message, the email is deleted from all of your Gmail views. The message or messages will no longer be viewable in your inbox, sent messages or all mail folders. If you want to view the message in any of your views in the future, you must keep the message in your Gmail account and not delete it.
Reversal
When you delete a message, Gmail automatically sends it to your trash bin. Messages stay in your trash for 30 days before they are deleted forever. To restore a sent message to your Gmail folders, click the "Trash" link in the left column of you Gmail screen. Check the box next to your message and choose the folder where you want to place the message from the "Send To" menu.
