Gmail Inbox Views iPad

Both the Mail and the Gmail app for the iPad feature straightforward account setup and give you access to your Gmail messages with only a few taps of your finger. Their similar split window formats, though great for sorting and reading emails, lack some of the other features – like contact management and IMAP or POP3 preferences – available in a typical desktop version. Though it's not possible to change this view within either app, you can select alternate views by accessing Gmail from Safari instead.

Mobile Default View
The typical mobile Gmail view is similar across the board, whether you're accessing it from the iPad's Mail app, from the Gmail app you download from the App Store, or by logging into Safari. This streamlined mobile view, according to Google, provides a more modern and less cluttered interface.

Changing the View
By using Safari to log into your Gmail account, you can alternate between three views that are inaccessible on the installed apps. Start by navigating to the Gmail.com page and logging in with your email username and password. Once your email opens, scroll down the left-hand menu to the very bottom. You will be given the option to access your messages via the "Mobile," "Basic HTML" or "Desktop" versions of Gmail.

Views Defined
The "Mobile" setting is the default view, similar to what's available in the iPad's Mail and Gmail apps. The "Basic HTML" setting is designed for browsers that don't support all of Gmail's features. This setting prevents access to chat, spell checkers, filters, contacts and other more sophisticated features. The "Desktop" view gives full access to all Gmail features and preferences you'd normally see when logging in from a typical desktop browser.

Warnings
You won't be able to set this view as your default, and you'll have to change this setting every time you log in with Safari. On the other hand, most features that are only accessible with the Desktop view, like forwarding settings or contacts management, are not needed for day-to-day Gmail usage. It isn't likely you will need to change the views on a regular basis.
