If you use Google Gmail and want to transfer contacts from the Address Book application on your Macintosh, you can do so by importing the contacts into Gmail. According to David Pogue, author of "Mac OS X Leopard Edition: The Missing Manual," Address Book uses virtual business cards (vCards) for your contact entries, which can be imported to Gmail. Once imported, your Address Book contacts will merge with Gmail contacts and store them on your Gmail account.
Open the Address Book application on your Macintosh by double-clicking the "Address Book" icon in the Applications folder. The folder is found under Finder, the first icon on your desktop Dock.
Click the first vCard entry in Address Book, and hold the "Shift" key. Scroll down to the last entry, and click it to highlight all of the Address Book's vCards.
Select "File" on the menu bar at the top of the screen, and select "Export" and "Export vCards" on the drop-down menu. Select "OK" to save your vCards to the folder listed in the "Export vCards" window.
Open a browser and log in to your Gmail account. Click "Contacts" on the left side of the browser window, then click "Import."
Select "Browse," and double-click the vCards file in the folder used to save your Address Book contacts. Click "Import" to finalize importing.
