Import Sent Mail From Another Email Address Into Gmail

Gmail, Google's official email product, is a communications solution that affords a user the ability to search his inbox just as he would the Internet, "archive" messages for later use rather than deleting them and several other advantages. When you make the switch to Gmail, it's possible to "import" your contacts and received email messages -- but not sent mail from your other account.

Import Options
It's possible to import email contacts and messages from several email providers into Gmail. The list is extensive, spanning major name U.S.-based email providers such as AOL, Hotmail and Yahoo! and international ones like Orange UK and Wanadoo France. One you've confirmed that you use a supported email provider -- an update list is available on the Gmail "Help" site -- you can begin the process of importing your contacts and email messages.

The Import Process
Importing contacts and emails is a quick process. After logging into Gmail, click the "Gear" icon at the top, right corner of Gmail, then click "Email Settings." Open the "Accounts and Import Tab," then click "Import from Another Address." Enter your email address and password, then authorize Google to import contact and email files from this address. This process can take up to two days, although it may be quicker, depending on the volume of email and contacts you transfer. Gmail notifies you via email when the process is complete.

Sent Emails
Gmail imports most of the messages -- and any files attached to them, as well as the folders in which you store different messages -- from your email inbox, unless a conflict of email file formats occurs. Gmail does not import sent messages from you old email account under any circumstances as of May 2011, according to the official "Gmail Help" listing on the subject.

Emails Left on Old Account
When Gmail imports email and contact information into your account, it doesn't remove this information from your old email account. In fact, it doesn't harvest the original email messages at all, but rather copies of them. Of course, in the case of sent email, this is inconsequential, as it doesn't import those messages at all. Still, you won't have to worry about not having your messages, sent or otherwise, should you choose to leave Gmail in the future.
