If you've switched your email from AOL to Gmail, you don't want to leave all of your contacts behind. A simple way to move over your contacts from your old mail to the new Gmail account is to use the tools within Gmail. Gmail also gives you the option to move over your old messages, and you can even keep importing the messages accidentally sent to your old account for a period of time.
AOL Account Access
Before you start the transfer process, make sure you still have access to your AOL email account. Have your user name and password handy because you'll need it for the transfer. If you're no longer able to sign in to your AOL account, then you'll be unable to transfer your contacts.
Set Up Transfer
Once you're signed in to your new Gmail account, navigate through the settings and click on "Import Mail and Contacts." Within the next screen, fill in your AOL email address and click "Continue." Then type in your password on the next screen.
Select Import Options
After entering your AOL password, the next screen provides you with a list of import options. In this menu, you can choose what you'd like to import to your Gmail account. Click on the check box next to "Import Contacts" to import the contacts to the new email. You may also choose to import old messages or new incoming messages that enter your AOL account. You also have the option to choose a folder for when these messages are imported.
Complete the Import
Click on "Start Import" to begin the transfer. Gmail will alert you to how long it may take to complete the import. Be prepared for it to take 48 hours before you see imported messages. If you want to check on your import over the course of the import, navigate back to the settings and the import tab to get an updated status.
After the Import
When the import is completed, your contacts will be present in your Gmail account. The import doesn't remove contacts or emails from your AOL account, so if you no longer wish to use that account, you have to remove them yourself.
