The breed originated as a result of planned breeding between the Siamese, and some domestic cats breeds of England that were black in color. This was carried out by a group of cats fanciers who intended to develop a self-brown cats breed. The features of the resulting breed, the Havana Brown, have been elaborated in this article. Why Havana Brown?
The name Havana Brown is also believed to have come from Havana cigars which bear a similar color as the breed.
The group who created the breed proudly called themselves 'The Havana Group', therefore the name Havana Brown. The breed underwent a lot of experimentation, whereby it was further out-crossed in order to curb genetic defects. Some kittens were also exported to breeders in America for experimentation.
American breeders aimed to breed only self-brown kittens and retain the looks of the imported cats. Thus, the American Havana Browns were more consistent in terms of color and looks, bearing a rich mahogany brown coat. On the other hand, cats in England began varying in looks and color due to rigorous out-crossing. This is the reason why American Havana Browns look different than their English counterparts.

Physical Characteristics
A medium-sized muscular cat, the Havana Brown has a classy brown (chestnut or mahogany) coat and short hair. The shape of the head is slightly longer than its width, and tapers down to a roundish muzzle (which resembles a light bulb). Although these cats look small and slender, they weigh pretty much more than what they seem to; also, males are proportionally larger than females.
These cats have long, broad-based ears that are rounded at the tips. The face has an ever-alert expression with green almond-shaped eyes, pointed ears, a light brownish nose, whiskers, and little bushy hair on the chin. Overall they look very elegant, and their unique appearance reflects their charming and delightful demeanor.
As for grooming, these cats require only a minimal effort. However, one should see to it that the cat is regularly bathed, its fur is brushed, nails are clipped, and ears are cleaned to avoid any sort of bacterial or fungal infections.
Temperament
To describe their temperament in four simple words, one can say they are affectionate, intelligent, inquisitive, and mischievous. Being moderately active, they love wandering around the house or playing with other cats, dogs, or even kids. But once they are done burning their energy bundles, they'll prefer going to sleep; napping or snoozing is possibly the second-most loved thing on their to-do lists.
Being curious in nature, they'll sniff and feel every foreign object they come across, so don't forget to lock away all of your 'very important' stuff. These cats are extremely social, and essentially require and enjoy the company of humans. This social nature makes them participate in every other activity in the house. Also, they are extremely friendly with kids and other pets (as mentioned before).
These cats are rarely destructive, except if left alone. They love interacting a lot, and a lot of coquettish meowing is a part of this regime. They also communicate using their paws, so a Havana Brown feeling you with its paw accompanied by a hi! (meow) is nothing surprising.
Health
Havana Browns have a lifespan of a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 15 years. They are hypoallergenic, and aren't prone to any particular genetic disease. However, they can be slightly susceptible to gingivitis.
Occasional visits to the vet and maintaining proper hygiene would keep this kitty in perfect shape. Do make it a point to feed it nutritious, protein-rich food. Its routine activities like sprinting around or playing are enough to keep its exercise needs under control.
