Google launched its free Web-based email service, called Gmail, in 2004. At the time, Gmail offered users a gigabyte of email storage, an amount that has since risen to more than 7GB. The email service was accessible by invitation only for the first three years of its existence, but began allowing open registration in 2007.
Launch a Web browser and navigate to Gmail's website at Gmail.com.
Click "Create an Account."
Complete the account registration form with your name, desired Gmail login, password and birthdate. Select a security question and enter an alternate email address that you can use to recover access to your account if it becomes compromised or you forget your password.
Click "I Accept. Create My Account." to create your free Gmail account. You can log in and begin using it immediately.
