How to Backtrack Your Routed Emails

You can backtrack email received and sent to services such as Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo, AOL mail and Gmail by finding the originator's IP address in the email header. Every email that arrives in your inbox will contain information about the sender and the routing of the message. The header will also reveal the email hosting service that the sender used to send the email. Email headers and IP addresses will not yield any personal information. However, you can uncover the city location and the name of the Internet service provider (ISP).

Email header information
Open your email program and navigate to your email inbox. Place your mouse over the email link as it is displayed in your list of inbox emails. Right click on the message and choose "Message Options" or "Properties" depending on your email service. Open the email and select "Properties" or "View Header" if right clicking does not work with your email provider.

Scroll to the bottom of the header information. Look for the IP address of the sender beginning at the bottom and working your way up. The original sender's IP address will be the last IP address listed in the header. Check the last "Received" line in the header to find the IP address or the domain name of the original sender.

Locate the city and ISP service of the originator of the email message by copying and pasting the IP address into an IP search website. Choose a website, such as whatismyip.com, whois.sc or ip2location.com. Type or paste a copy of the IP address into the search bar and click "Search" to get a free report on the city, domain server and ISP server of the email sender.
