Send Email Attachments in Gmail

Sending files as attachments in Gmail is fairly simple. However, Gmail places an email size limit of 25 MB for a single message. Also, for security reasons, Gmail will not permit you to send certain types of files, such as executable files, as email attachments. In addition, Adobe Flash Player is required to use the advanced email attachment uploader. If you experience problems with this Flash-based attachment uploader, you can disable it and use one that doesn't require Flash.

Install the latest version of Flash Player, if it isn't already installed on your computer.

Navigate to Gmail and sign in to your account.

Click the "Compose Mail" link in the upper left corner of the window. Click "Attach a file" beneath the "Subject" line of the email.

Browse your hard drive for the files you would like to attach to the email. Press "Shift" while clicking the mouse to select multiple contiguous files. Press "Ctrl" and click the mouse to select multiple files that are not right next to each other. Click "Open."

Select "Attach another file" to add more files to the list to be attached. Click the check mark beside any file you wish to remove from the email. Click "Send."

Tips & Warnings

Make large files smaller by zipping them before sending them. Click "Start" and "My Computer." Navigate to the file that you'd like to send as an email attachment. Right click the file and select "Send to" and "Compressed Zipped Folder." Keep in mind that this option will only work if the file is slightly above the 25 MB size limit. Send large files as email attachments in separate messages in Gmail to remain within the size limit.
If you experience problems with using the advanced email attachment uploader in Gmail, click "Settings" in the Gmail window. In the "General" tab, scroll down to "Attachments." Click the button beside "Basic attachment features." You will only be able to send one file at a time using the basic email attachment uploader.
Even if the total size of the attachments in your email is under 25 MB, the size of the email message when sent may exceed the limit. For best results, try to keep the total size of your Gmail attachments below 25 MB.
Your recipient's email attachment limit may be smaller than Gmail's. Contact your recipient to find out if he can receive the attachments before you send them.
