While some users prefer to be notified of new mail via a system tray icon, other users prefer to hear a familiar ding, chime or other sound to indicate new mail. Windows provides a master control for email-related sounds, along with other program-related sounds, through the Control Panel. If you want to use your own sounds when setting up sound on your email, you must copy the desired WAV files to your computer's hard disk and know where they are located.
Click on "Start," then "Control Panel." Click on "Classic View" if applicable.
Double-click "Sound" in Windows Vista and Windows 7 or "Sounds and Audio Devices" in Windows XP.
Click on the "Sounds" tab.
Scroll through the "Program" sounds. Select "New Mail Notification" first.
Click on the "Sounds" drop-down menu. Select the sound you wish to play when you receive new mail. Click the "Browse" button to use your own custom WAV sound file. Navigate to and double-click the file to use it. Click the "Test" button to listen to the sound.
Repeat with any other program sounds that play in your email software.
Click "Apply," then "OK."
