Mozilla Thunderbird performs background actions while the program is open to ensure email access runs smoothly; it keeps a log of all activities performed while the program is in use. The activity-monitor tools display the history of the program's actions, which allows you to keep an eye on what is managed by the program. Some settings, such as the automated message check to your server, can be configured to reduce the frequency of background actions or disabled entirely to improve performance.
Double-click "Thunderbird" on your desktop or click "Start" on the desktop and click "All Programs," "Mozilla" and "Thunderbird" to launch the program.
Click the Tools menu at the top of the Thunderbird window. Click "Activity Manager" in the pull-down menu. The Activity Manager shows a history of all background activity performed while the program was open.

Click the arrow next to your account name in the left-side menu of the Account Settings window. Click "Server Settings" below your account name.
Uncheck the box next to "Check for new messages every # minutes." Click "OK" to save the settings.
