Yahoo! IM Account Same As Yahoo eMail

Yahoo! is one of the older services on the Internet, with service features such as Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger, dating back to the 1990s. Because the services are integrated with a single Yahoo! account, some users may wonder whether they will expose their email addresses to other users when using chat features of Yahoo! Messenger. While the services do use the same account, there are ways to prevent this from happening.

Yahoo! Accounts
Like many Web-based services, Yahoo! uses a single account to access multiple aspects of the Yahoo! service including Yahoo! Mail and the Yahoo! Messenger instant messaging client. A user can sign into his Yahoo! account from any Yahoo! website and may select the option to stay signed in to the account for up to two weeks. The same account ID can be used to sign in to Yahoo! Messenger using the Messenger client or the Internet-based Yahoo! Web Messenger website.

Yahoo! Aliases
In addition to the primary account ID associated with a Yahoo! account, users can create alias IDs for use instead of the primary ID. These alias IDs function similarly to the user's primary account ID and are used to sign into Yahoo! services instead of the primary ID. A user can create a profile for each of her account aliases, allowing each alias ID to appear as a separate account despite being linked to the primary ID.

Yahoo! Mail
A Yahoo! Mail email account uses the primary ID associated with a Yahoo! account as its address ID. While it was possible in the past to set a Yahoo! alias as a user's email address instead of the primary ID, email account creation is now integrated with Yahoo! account registration so that the Yahoo! Mail address is created at the same time as the account's primary Yahoo! ID. The email address can be used in place of the Yahoo! ID to sign in to any Yahoo! website or service.

Yahoo! IM and Aliases
Yahoo! Messenger allows users to make use of their alias IDs when sending instant messages or participating in a conversation in one of the Yahoo! chat rooms. A drop-down menu allows users to select the alias they wish to use, with the default menu option for IM conversations being the most recently-used option. Other users can add any of the user's alias IDs as a contact, allowing them to send messages directly to that alias without having knowledge of other aliases or the user's primary account ID.
