Configure Mozilla for Yahoo Mail

Like most other Web mail services, Yahoo Mail allows you to receive and send mail using third-party clients such as Thunderbird -- which can be handy if you wish to read or compose emails while you are offline. Before setting up your Yahoo inbox in Thunderbird, first check whether your Yahoo Mail account is ready to accept connections from third-party clients -- a feature known as post office protocol access.

Step 1
Log in to Yahoo Mail and click on the "Cog" icon. Select "Settings" from the pop-up menu to open the Settings window.

Step 2
Select "Accounts" from the left sidebar and click on the "Edit" button next to your Yahoo email address in the Yahoo account section of the page.

Step 3
Activate the radio button next to POP if it is currently disabled. Optionally, you can use the drop-down menu to specify how you want Yahoo Mail to handle spam emails sent to your email client.

Step 4
Click the "Save" button to save your new settings.

Step 1
Launch Thunderbird and click on "Email" under Create a New Account.

Step 2
Click on the "Skip this and use my existing email" button to start the account creation wizard.

Step 3
Enter your full name as well as your Yahoo Mail email and password. You may also deactivate the "Remember password" check box if you prefer to enter your password manually every time you check your emails in Thunderbird. Click on "Continue."

Step 4
Click on the radio button next to "POP3." Note that Thunderbird has already downloaded the default configuration for Yahoo Mail. You should, however, manually check those settings to ensure Thunderbird applied the correct settings. To do so, click on "Manual config."

Step 5
Set the Incoming protocol to "POP," the server hostname to "pop.mail.yahoo.com," the port to "995," the security protocol to "SSL/TLS" and the authentication method to "Normal password."

The Outgoing settings should be set, respectively, to "SMTP," "smtp.mail.yahoo.com," "465," "SSL/TLS" and "Normal password."

Type your Yahoo email address -- including the "@yahoo.com" part -- in both the incoming and outgoing Username fields. Finally, click "Done" to finish the account creation process and start reading your Yahoo mails in Thunderbird.
