Many things about baseball have changed over the years, such as equipment and even some rules, but the basic layout of the field has remained consistent for over 100 years. This consistency has made baseball field dimensions almost sacred to fans and players of the game. In order to mark a baseball field, you must pay careful attention to these dimensions.
Start by determining where home plate will be. All dimensions will be based upon where home plate is located.
Place second base directly in front of home plate. It should be 127 feet, 3 3/8 inches away from home plate.
Mark first and third base. First and third base should both be 90 feet from home plate and 90 feet from second base. As long as second base is exactly 127 feet, 3 3/8 inches from home plate in a straight line, all bases should be 90 feet apart and the layout should form a diamond shape on the baseball field.
Put the pitching rubber 60 feet 6 inches away from home plate.
Draw the foul lines. Using powdered chalk, draw a straight line from the front corner of home plate to the outside edge of first base and then, on the other side do the same with third base. Continue the straight line out into the outfield until it reaches the fence.
Consider adding batter's boxes to the layout of the baseball field. The batter's boxes are boxes on each side of home plate, 4 feet wide and 6 feet long which indicate where the batter is supposed to stand. If you do this, line up the foul line with the corner of home plate, but start drawing the line at the corner of the batter's box instead.
Give the first and third base coaches a place to stand. Draw boxes in foul territory by first base and by third base. There is no official designated size a coach's box needs to be.
