How to Palm in Basketball

There's nothing like the energy boost that comes from jamming a basketball. And palming a basketball is an important part of in-game, contested dunking. Spread your hand, orient the basketball correctly and get a grip to master this impressive skill.

Get a Grip
Spread your dominant hand's fingers out so that your pinkie and thumb point directly away from each other. Place the pinkie and thumb in the crease of a straight seam on the basketball, squeezing in like a lobster claw with the pads of the fingers. Try to reach your three middle fingers to the next curved seam above the straight seam. Dig the pads of the three middle fingers into the curved seam and squeeze. Traction from your fingertips should hold onto the tackiness of the ball, allowing you to hold it with one hand.

Tips for Palming
Place your hand facedown on a table, spread your thumb and pinkie as far apart as possible and measure from the tip of the pinkie to the end of the thumb. If your hand doesn't measure at least 8.25 inches across, you are going to have a very difficult time palming a basketball. New basketballs tend to be tackier and provide better grip. A regulation men's basketball is 29.5 inches in circumference and a women's basketball is 28.5 inches. If you are trying to palm a men's basketball, you can start by practicing on a women's ball.
