Make Double Header Schedule

Former Chicago Cubs star Ernie Banks is well-known for saying, "It's a great day for a ball game; let's play two!" Professional baseball doubleheaders are generally the result of having to makeup a prior game that has been canceled due to bad weather. However, doubleheaders are commonly scheduled by amateur and college baseball and softball teams to reduce travel costs and squeeze more games into a schedule. Proper planning will ensure that a doubleheader runs smoothly and provides a positive experience for players and fans.

Select a game date on which both teams are available to play.

Select a game location.

Determine whether the home team, usually the host team, will be the home team for both games, or if they will be the home team for one game and the away team for the other. In baseball and softball the home team typically takes the field first and bats after the away team.

Determine how many innings each game will be. Most college baseball doubleheaders have one nine-inning game and one seven-inning game, while amateurs generally play two seven-inning games. Softball doubleheaders are usually two seven-inning games.

Select a doubleheader start time. Consideration must be made for the playing of two games and at minimum, a 20-minute break in between games. Allocating 3 1/2 hours for a nine-inning baseball game and 2 1/2 hours for a seven-inning baseball or softball game are reasonably conservative estimates.

Determine the amount of break time teams will have after the completion of Game 1 before beginning Game 2. A 20- to 30-minute period will give players ample opportunity to rest, eat and refuel.
