Tips to Float in Pool Naturally

Floating in the pool may come as second nature to some, while other people have more trouble with technique. Even people who can swim are not necessarily able to float without using their arms and legs to propel them. Whether you're relaxing in a saltwater pool or passing the time in a chlorinated pool, you can learn how to float naturally, no matter what your swimming level is.

Relax. If your body is tense, you will not float, no matter what. Your body's natural reaction is to float in the water, so if you take deep breaths and allow your body to do the work, you're halfway there.

Find an area of the pool where you feel comfortable. A waist-deep area that is next to a bar or ledge is the ideal place to start your floating practice.

Have a partner stand next to you to lift your back up in the air as you are practicing. Like putting training wheels on a bike, your partner can adjust your position without you having to get up and start over again.

Place your feet shoulder-width apart, then bend your knees until your shoulders are in the water. Carefully arch your back so your head, shoulders and upper back are resting on the water.

Allow your legs and torso to float up to meet your shoulders. If you start to wobble or go under, your partner can adjust your position.

Take deep breaths. As you continue to relax, your body will rise to the top of the water.
