Sand & Paint Your Skateboard

A skateboarding board consists of the deck (the wood board), axles (called "trucks") and wheels. While many skateboarding fans are content in finding a deck with a design already painted on it, others may want to try creating their own artwork. You can customize your skateboarding deck by painting it with designs and colors of your choosing, using only a few basic supplies. First, though, you'll need to sand the deck to remove the old paint and prepare it for your custom design.

Remove the screws holding the trucks on the deck with the Phillips screwdriver. Each set of trucks is typically fastened on with four screws. Set aside the trucks and screws.

Pin a piece of the 60-grit sandpaper to the sanding block (a wood or foam block) with the thumbtack. Put on the dust mask.

Sand & Paint Your Skateboard
Sand the existing paint off of the deck with the 60-grit sandpaper. Use even, circular motions to remove the paint without damaging the underlying wood of the deck. Gently sand around the edges of the board.

Remove the 60-grit sandpaper from the sanding block and attach the 120-grit sandpaper. Lightly sand the entire bottom and edges of the deck to give it a smooth finish.

Wipe the board down with a rag to remove any sanding dust. Remove the dust mask.

Set the board with the grip tape side facing down on a few sheets of newspaper.

Spray a thin, even coat of your desired color of acrylic spray paint onto the surface of the deck. This will serve as a background to your design. Allow the paint to dry, then respray to create an opaque layer of paint. Allow this coat to sit until it is dry to the touch, which may take several hours.

Sketch the design you wish to paint on the skateboard deck in pencil. Use a light touch to keep from damaging the paint.

Use the acrylic paint and paintbrushes to paint a design onto the surface of the deck. Remember that the areas under where the trucks are fastened will not be visible. Allow the paint several hours to dry. If you decide to apply touch-ups to the artwork, allow the deck enough time to dry first.

Spray a thin coat of clear shellac over the surface of the deck and allow it to dry for one hour. Repeat this step to apply several coats of the clear shellac, which will protect the painted artwork. Allow several hours for these coats to dry completely.

Fasten the trucks securely onto the skateboarding deck using the screws removed in Step 1 and the Phillips screwdriver.
