Tips for Basketball Hop Step

Also known as a jump stop, the hop step stretches the definition of a travel; allowing you to leave the ground for a mini jump before you take your real jump to attack the basket. You can jump stop after charging straight at the hoop split the defense or you can sidestep a defender using a hop-step layup. It's an effective weapon, allowing you to gain ground quickly and stop abruptly using both feet.

Gain speed and dribble straight at the hoop. Dribble the ball high, about shoulder height, as you enter the paint area.

Pick up your dribble at its peak. Bring your non-dribbling hand up to shoulder height and pound the ball with both hands securely, keeping it safe from swiping defenders.

Jump off one foot straight at the hoop. If you are dribbling right-handed, jump off of your left foot like you would a layup, and vice versa for your left hand. Use your momentum to jump low and lateral without much height or the referee will likely call a travel.

Stop on both feet near the hoop. You can now jump vertically to attack the basket using all the energy of your drive, or hold your position to look for a pass or fake a shot.

Sidestep
Attack the right or left side of the paint. Protect the ball dribbling with your outside hand; the right hand for the right side of the paint or the left hand on the left side. Dribble along the border of the paint, going straight for the block.

Pound the ball with a chest-high dribble as you pass the elbow. Pick your dribble up with two hands at its peak and swing the ball in an arch over your head to the other side of your body. Time your mini jump to coincide with the high dribble to give the transfer more energy.

Launch sideways into the middle of the paint off your outside foot while skipping with your inside foot, causing you to leave the ground for a mini jump. You won't be able to ride your momentum because of the abrupt change of direction. Rather, you'll need to use agility and explosiveness for a long, low, sidestepping jump.

Hit the ground with both feet momentarily and use the strength of your hop step jump immediately, attacking the hoop. Jump in control of the ball with both hands and then transfer the ball to your inside hand. Cup the ball and use the energy of your upsurge to raise it to the hoop, releasing it with a flip of the fingers at the peak of your jump for a soft shot.
