Friction is the enemy when it comes to skateboarding since it slows the wheels and interferes with speed and control. The cure is skate wax, which when applied to curbs, rails and ledges, creates a slick surface, along with a fast and smooth ride. Though skate wax is available in most skate shops and sporting goods stores, you can make an economical version at home in less than 30 minutes.
Cut the top off of an aluminum can, such as a soda can. The can, which is disposable, will be used to melt the wax.
Chop candles, paraffin or craft wax into small pieces. Add color to the skate wax by including pieces of a crayon. Fill the can halfway with the wax pieces; the halfway mark will prevent the melted wax from overflowing.
Pour ½ to 1 inch of cooking oil over the wax pieces, depending on the desired amount of slickness; more oil will result in a slicker surface. Examples of cooking oil are olive or vegetable oil.
Fill a saucepan with 2 to 3 inches of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and place the can in the pot to create a double boiler. Stir the wax as it melts.
Turn the stove off and lift the aluminum can out of the water using the tongs. Place the can in the refrigerator and allow it to set for at least 10 minutes.
Extract the wax from the can by inserting a butter knife between the metal and the wax. Alternatively, cut the can and peel it away from the wax.
