Being able to turn on your skateboard is an essential skill for beginning skateboarders to master. The right way to turn depends on the degree of your desired turn. When you’re looking to make gradual turns, you can do so by shifting more of your bodyweight onto the heels or balls of your feet. This gentle changing of the pressure on your feet will squish the bushings of the trucks on one side and cause them to pivot, which in turn makes the board turn in the same relative direction.
For a Tight Turn
When you need to make a sharp turn on your board, you’ll want to employ a kickturn. Apply more of your bodyweight to your foot positioned at the back tail of the board. This will pick up the front wheels slightly and allow you to use your lead foot to spin the nose of your board and aim it into the desired direction. Once you’ve finished moving the nose, shift your bodyweight slightly forward to set your front wheels back down. For a particularly tight turn, you may not be able to turn the nose all the way into the direction you want to go in one movement, so you’ll need to repeat the process to move your board around in a circle incrementally.
