Customizing your skateboard can be an artistic enjoyment. Detailing it to your liking can give you a sense of individuality. Painting blank skateboard decks can also become a hobby or even a source of income. Some skate shops do their own custom skate boards and sell them at discount prices. Painting a blank deck does not require a lot of time, but does require some detail in order to produce a quality finish.
Prepare your deck by making sure that the wheels and trucks (wheel axles) are off the board deck. Begin by sanding the entire surface of the deck and smoothing out any deep scratches. Use the finer 2-point sandpaper because anything more coarse will cause a scratched and unprofessional job. Be sure all areas of the surface are sanded.
Wipe the entire surface down in order to remove any remaining wood particles and then apply primer. Primer is used to ensure that the paint will stick better to the surface of the wood. Cover the entire surface with a light but thorough coat of the primer. Let it dry for two hours. Go back and make sure that there are not any streaks or areas that were missed. If there are, simply cover those areas lightly with primer and again allow to dry for two hours.
Cover the surface with the desired amount of paint. If you prefer for the wood of the deck to be less apparent, apply a thicker coat. This may also be done by allowing the first coat to dry for two hours and applying another. Repeat this process until the desired look is achieved. Once the deck has been painted and the desired appearance is done, allow the deck to dry for two hours.
Cover the deck with the paint finish again. Paint finish comes in different gloss scales. These scales range from light gloss and medium gloss to high gloss. Depending on the desired gloss or shine finish, pick the paint finish accordingly. Cover the entire surface and allow the deck to dry for three hours.
