V-berths are sleeping areas in the front sides of a boat, so called because the prow comes together in the shape of a "V." They are often used for storing things like extra sails instead of sleeping. V-berth sheets are bedsheets used in these forward berths.
V-Berth Accommodations
Not everyone finds sleeping in a V-berth comfortable. One boating magazine writer maintained they were only for "short people or people who don't mind sharing athlete's feet," adding that two kids put in a V-berth would soon be fighting with each other. Certainly the smaller and narrower the boat, the less comfortable the berth is likely to be, particularly on sailboats with their narrower beams. However, larger boats will offer more comfortable V-berths. Designs for the berths are many and varied and so are the mattresses that are meant for them, which may be one-piece or two-, and sometimes feature an insert in the bottom of the V. Boaters can order custom sheets for their V-berths; use sheets that adjust to fit many sizes of V-berths; make their own custom V-berth sheets; or just use regular sheets by tucking in the ends as needed to cover the mattress.
