Best Tips to Disassemble Mossberg 535

The Mossberg 535 is a tactical 12-gauge pump shotgun. Used primarily for hunting and home defense, the gun will fire 3½-inch shotgun shells and typically has a six-shot capacity. As with any shotgun, the Mossberg 535 must be maintained. The gun should be clean and oiled regularly; to do that, you have to know how to disassemble it. Luckily, even the most neophyte shotgun owner can quickly and easily disassemble the 535.

Step 1
Clear the gun to ensure it is not loaded. Examine the magazine port to ensure there is no magazine in place. Press the slide-stop lever, located near the trigger and pull the slide back to clear any shells from the chamber. Visually inspect the chamber to make sure there are no shells.

Step 2
Remove the barrel by moving the slide forward about halfway. Remove the barrel screw, located at the end of the slide rail, just underneath the barrel. The screw can be unscrewed by hand. Once the screw is removed, slide the barrel out from the main body of the gun, otherwise known as the receiver.

Step 3
Use your punch-down tool to punch out the trigger housing pin. Place the end of the tool against the pin and lightly tap it with a small hammer to push it out of the receiver. Once the pin is removed, pull the trigger housing out of the receiver. Removing the trigger housing allows you to access the shotgun's internal components from the bottom of the receiver.

Step 4
Remove the cartridge interrupter and cartridge stop. Both are located along the sides of the shotgun's main chamber. If the pieces do not fall out when you remove the trigger housing, simply grab them and pull them out to remove them.

Step 5
Locate the bolt and bolt slide in the center of the shotgun's chamber. Slide the bolt toward the rear of the receiver. Along the top of the bolt is the bolt slide. Lift it up and off of the bolt with your fingers and remove it from the receiver.

Step 6
Remove the slide by sliding it away from the rear of the gun. Keep sliding until it comes free of the slide rail.

Step 7
Use you thumb to push the bolt out of the front of the receiver and remove it from the receiver.

Step 8
Remove the elevator. The elevation is a long, U-shaped piece inside the receiver. Lift the end up and squeeze the prongs together. Pull the elevator out of the receiver.
