Ideas for Painting Semi Gloss on Doors

Semi-gloss is a type of paint that's not as shiny as gloss as high-gloss paint, but not as dull as flat paint. Semi-gloss paint is ideal for cabinets, doors and walls that come in contact with fingerprints, since the paint is easily cleaned with a damp cloth or rag. As with other paints, you must complete certain steps before painting doors in your residential or commercial structure with semi-gloss paint.

Cleaning
Before painting your doors with semi-gloss, clean them with a damp, soft cloth or rag to remove any dust and dirt from the doors' surfaces. Don't forget to wipe any crevices and ridges--these areas have the highest concentration of dust and dirt. Dry the doors thoroughly with a clean cloth or rag.

Removing Loose Paint & Filling Holes
Use a paint scraper to remove any loose and chipping paint from the doors. Use a spackling compound to fill any holes, low spots and large dents in your doors. Note that more than one application of spackling may be needed to fully fill any holes and other imperfections. Then sand your doors with a piece of 150-grit sandpaper. Use a tack cloth or vacuum cleaner to remove any sand dust from the doors' surfaces.

Primer
Before applying semi-gloss paint, apply one coat of a high-quality primer to your doors. The primer not only covers the previous paint on your doors, but also helps semi-gloss paint adhere to the doors' surfaces better. After the primer is dry, sand your doors with a piece of 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out the doors' surfaces. Wipe down the surfaces with a tack cloth or use a vacuum cleaner to remove any sand dust from the doors' surfaces.

Purchasing Paint and Tools
Purchase and use a high-quality semi-gloss paint as well as new paint rollers and brushes. You don't want to use old or dirty rollers and brushes to apply your paint. Make sure you purchase enough paint to complete the task and don't forget about drop cloths; paint trays; painters or masking tape; paint thinner for cleaning up your rollers and brushes; and soft cloths to help during the clean up process.

Covering Door Hardware
Cover any hardware on your doors with painter's or masking tape, if you can't remove the doors' hardware. Cover the area below your doors with a drop cloth or other covering (newspapers or cardboard work well). Fill a small bucket with water and place one or two cloths in the bucket in case you need to wipe up a paint spill or spots.

Painting Tips
Paint the doors with semi-gloss from top to bottom. Start with your doors' moldings first, then paint the door's interior panels. Use a paint roller to achieve an even pattern. If using a paint brush, finish each door panel with an upward stroke to achieve an even pattern and keep the paint from dripping. Paint the doors' hinged area, frame and areas along the top and side of the door last. Use a smaller brush to paint areas that the roller cannot reach.

Excess Paint
Do not apply too much semi-gloss paint to your rollers or brushes--this will cause the paint to pool in crevices, corners and moldings. Roll or brush off excess paint onto your paint tray.

Coats
Apply a light first coat and let it dry before applying a second coat of semi-gloss paint.
