No matter what kind of jewelry you own, it all gets dull and dirty from time to time. Keep your prized jewelry clean and sparkly without investing a lot of money in commercial cleaners. Using a few household products, you can clean most of your jewelry at home, safely, quickly and easily.
Gold and Silver
Step 1
Remove your gold jewelry before attempting to clean it. If the jewelry is not tarnished but just dirty, soak the jewelry for 15 minutes in a mixture of 2 cups of warm water and a few drops of a mild dish detergent.
Step 2
Remove the gold jewelry from the water and gently scrub it with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse it with clean, lukewarm water and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Step 3
If gold jewelry shows some tarnish, mix a few drops of ammonia into the water and clean as directed.
Step 4
Sterling silver is a soft metal and can scratch easily. Clean it safely with a silver polishing cloth. Do not scrub with a toothbrush or with any abrasive cleaners like toothpaste.
Diamonds and Precious Stones
Step 1
Diamonds and other precious stones can become dulled and lose sparkle over time. Clean the stones by soaking for 15 minutes in a solution of 2 cups of warm water and a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent.
Step 2
Remove the stones from the water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Step 3
If some dirt or residue remains, soak the stones again and gently scrub the dirt away using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Pearls
Step 1
Dampen a soft cloth with a solution of warm water and a few drops of dish detergent.
Step 2
Rub each pearl with the dampened cloth until it is clean. Repeat for each pearl until the strand is cleaned.
Step 3
Avoid submerging your pearl necklace in water. Water can cause the necklace to stretch.
