Tips to Get Grease Spots Out of Clothing

Grease spots on clothing can occur from a number of things, ranging from food to chemicals. Luckily, grease stains are simpler to remove than wine or grass stains, which involve a lot of scrubbing. But if chemical grease stains do not get treated properly or quickly, they can leave an indelible mark on a favorite shirt or pair of slacks. Deal with grease stains immediately to keep your clothes looking like new.

Lay the stained article of clothing flat with the stain facing up.

Dab paper towels on the stain to absorb the grease if the stain is fresh.

Sprinkle cornstarch directly on top of the grease stain. Let it sit overnight.

Brush off excess powder. If there is oily powder residue on the clothes, brush it off and apply more cornstarch on the affected areas and again let it sit overnight. Scrape off excess cornstarch.

Apply a small amount of dish detergent on the stain. Work the soap into the stain with your fingertips.

Soak the clothes in warm water for 15 to 30 minutes.

Wash the clothes in the washing machine as usual, following the manufacturer's directions. Dry as usual.

If the stain persists, apply rubbing alcohol on the stain. Test the alcohol in an inconspicuous area of the clothing, as it may lift some color. Rinse with clean water and wash and dry as usual.
