Causes, Symptoms and Treatment to Osteomyelitis

The culprit of this disease is a bacterium that produces pus or an eubacteria. Doctors generally classify Osteomyelitis depending on what caused the unhealthiness, where the bacterium came from, how long the patient has had the affliction and where the affliction is located in the body. There have been cases in which the patients with unhealthy bones and articulations have died, but that was because the disease was not detected at an early stage. This illness is not very common in adults but it may be more commonly seen among newborn babies.

Recent studies have revealed that the bones can be affected with the bacteria in different forms. One bacterium that affects bones more commonly is called staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium can go to the bone through the circulatory system. Another way is a straightforward infection. When there is a body injury, the bacteria can easily enter the body and reach your bones resulting in a bone infection. A more unusual form of getting Osteomyelitis is when the blood flow to the bones is halted for some reason.

Apart from the bacteria we mentioned above, there are other bacteria that can result in this illness namely E. coli and eubacteria. In some cases, drug addicts who use injections have been diagnosed with the disease. Some of the symptoms of the illness are:

- Pyrexia
- Tiredness
- Ill humor
- Discomfort
- Inability to move properly
- Redness, soreness and swelling of the skin

People who are at risk of getting the disease are those who have recently undergone injury. Patients with diabetes and kidney problems are prone to get it as well. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should check with your doctor. He will usually ask for a blood test to see if there has been an increase in the leucocytes. Another effective way of diagnosing the illness is with an x-ray because the doctor can localize the infected area.

If you have the disease, you will have to take antibiotics to stop the infection spreading to other parts of your body. If the disease was not diagnosed at an early stage, surgery might be the option in that case.

One thing we all need to remember is that in order to avoid getting the disease, we need to clean cuts and wounds immediately after we get them as the bacteria causing this disease enters through cuts and wounds.
