Life and Works of Michelangelo

Michelangelo was an artist who created works of art of unique beauty. His works are so important and appreciated that we consider them as unattainable by human ingenuity.

Michelangelo was an artist who was recognized as a genius in his own time. Various powerful people of the time ordered this great artist to carry out works in important places, such as, the San Pietro dome and the Sistina Chapel. Among his most significant works are the Pietà and David, who is one of most important symbol of the Renaissance.

Michelangelo preferred the sculpture to the other arts, perhaps because he grew in Settignano. There people extracted stone for the realization of the most prestigious homes in Florence.

Michelangelo's artistic training began in the workshop of Ghirlandaio, who we consider one of the most famous artists of Florence. Michelangelo's father sent him to Ghirlandaio's workshop so to contribute to the expenses of the family.

It seems that the Buonarroti family was going through a period of major economic difficulties, although it derives from a social class of importance. Father's decision to send Michelangelo to a workshop proves that the young Michelangelo had already expressed a strong artistic inclination.

Although at that time members of prominent families were not encouraged to be artists, as the artwork was considered a manual work and less noble comparing to other type of jobs. Despite this difficult economic time of Michelangelo Buonarroti family, the young man devoted himself fully body and soul in this kind of work.

In the workshop of Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo learned painting techniques and immediately showed his magnificent skills, he was one of the best artists of the workshop despite his young age.

After few years, Michelangelo began to frequent the Garden of San Marco, which was then a kind of art academy supported and financed by Lorenzo de Medici. Therefore, in the Garden of San Marco Michelangelo quickly highlighted his artistic talent. His success was such, that Lorenzo de Medici invited the young artist to be a guest at one of the Medici palaces.
