Leonardo Del Vecchio is Poor & Rich

Nothing comes easy in this world. The youngest of five children, Leonardo Del Vecchio must have had the worst childhood one could ever have. He has never seen his father because his father died five months before Leonardo was born. Unable to raise the children, his mother sent Leonardo to an orphanage in Milan.

He named his new company Luxottica and started selling eyeglass frames under the brand name, Luxottica. Having a business frame of mind, he felt the need for a vertical integration. Keeping this point in mind, he acquired the distribution company, Scarrone.

Imagine what life would have been for him. Having to fend for himself, Leonardo started his career as an apprentice tool and die maker in Milan. However, he had terrific metalworking skills. Hence, he switched to making spectacle parts. This trade made him shift base to Agordo, the home of the Italian eyewear industry.

The next step was the listing of the company on the New York and Milan stock exchanges. This paved the way for future takeovers. A spate of takeovers followed such as Vogue, Person and US Shoe Corporation, Ray-Ban, and Sunglass Hut. Very recently, his company took over the famous brand, Oakley.
