About an Inventory Clerks

The definition of an inventory clerk is quite simple: it's the person who monitors the stock that migrates in and outside a certain location. This is usually known as 'stockroom.' This person can work in a wholesale or retail outlet, at a warehouse, distribution center or in a factory. In most cases, these persons work alone, but when it comes to huge operations, they can be helped by assistants, who are meant to help them preserve the inventory levels.

The majority of companies are dependent on precise and correct inventories in order to maintain their clients happy and their profits on the positive side. For this job, the person in charge must track the motion of the goods in an accurate manner, in order to prevent the delay of production and a high number of lost sales. For a great control in inventory, one must keep a good record of the products of a company.

Another task that comes into the job description of an inventory clerk is the delivery signature when he receives a shipment of products. When receiving this package, he must do a quick inspection, but the thorough inspection is done when the product is unpacked. Thus, when putting the products on the right shelves or racks, he also separates the products broken or those that shouldn't have been delivered there, sending the latter ones back to the shipper.

The merchandise that has arrived to the right place is normally marked with clear information and priced. Then it is placed in the stockroom in order to ease its retrieval. In case the stock clerk receives requests for the items, the order has to be processed. With the help of a computer, an electronic device or a log written in hand, the inventory clerk is responsible with updating the record of the item's transfer.

Besides dispensing items on request, the person with a job like this normally has to reorder the products when the stock goes lower. In this category, we can also include special products which are given for a certain period of time or for a season. But these might need a special authorization in order to process them.

An inventory clerk also has to deal with the maintenance of the stockroom. Normally, this includes preserving the cleanliness of the room and eliminating the clutter that might prevent free mobility in that room. This person also has to check the thermostat and keep an eye on the temperature.
