Art and Science of Moving Things 'Lock - Stock and Barrel'

The health of world economies and businesses rides on the back of robust logistics networks. There is no survival without being able to move goods from one place to another. Within a state or a country too, raw materials have to move from where they are produced to manufacturing facilities and then comes the turn of finished goods to make their way across physical and procedural barriers to reach destinations where buyers can get hold of them. Many would feel that logistics is just another cog in the wheel but then it is the most important cog. The art is to understand the intricacies of the framework of worldwide logistics and be innovative enough to create a network that is reliable, sustainable and flexible to be able to meet changing needs. Processes involved are many as each country has its own rules, regulations and constraints within which such moves can be executed. For large scale operations, there has to be close co-ordination between smaller specialist departments at each end to ensure that consignments are looked after well and reach the intended destination without any glitches.

Essential elements

Any logistics company of note has to create an inter-meshed arrangement to include the following facilities:

• A reliable network connecting all or most of the sought after destinations within the country and around the globe to include capability to move by sea, air, road and rail.

• Ownership of a fleet large enough to meet the huge demand for move of goods.

• Professional tie up with other reliable bulk movers to enable continuity in move of cargo in case own capability is stretched.

• An efficient warehouse management system with adequate storage space to include environmentally controlled facilities for perishables and goods requiring specific storage conditions.

• An appropriate fleet of road carriers for move of goods to destinations ashore and to sea ports for loading.

• A secure transportation framework with a fool proof surveillance and security system in place to prevent thefts, pilferage or sabotage.

• Ability to handle special, high-value and dangerous cargo requiring specific handling and storage facilities.

• A fully functional administrative setup to get the paper work going and this includes international clearances required, certifications, insurance, taxation and the works.

• Capability to meet deadlines for collection and delivery.
