Choosing Inpatient Or Outpatient Rehab Centers

If you or someone you love has a problem with drugs or alcohol addiction, rehab centers can be a great resource for starting on the path to recovery. These facilities provide a safe and supportive environment for overcoming the physical and mental difficulties that often accompany the process of rehabilitation.

When deciding to undergo rehabilitation, it is important to consult with family and friends or a medical professional to help make the best decision for your life. Many treatment centers offer a range of options to accommodate the needs of different patients. They may vary in length of time, intensity, or types of therapy administered.

One of the primary decisions to make is whether to participate in an outpatient or inpatient course of treatment. Each has its own set of advantages. Your choice will probably depend on many factors, including the nature of your addiction, your lifestyle obligations, and the strength of your support system.

Inpatient

Inpatient or residential rehab centers offer a full-time, supervised program of recovery. Inpatient programs require a person to live at the facility for the duration of his or her treatment, which is usually between one and three months. The first part of the treatment is often devoted to the detoxification process, and the remainder is concerned with therapy and support to help maintain long-term recovery.

This type of program is designed to be an intensive, comprehensive rehabilitation experience. It is a good option for those whose addiction treatment may have been unsuccessful before or who are otherwise at higher risk of relapse.

The immersive nature of residential programs offers patients a chance to fully concentrate on their rehabilitation process without being distracted by the demands and temptations of daily life. They are surrounded by peers and staff who understand their experience and can offer support and encouragement. Many facilities offer family therapy as well to help foster healthy personal relationships.

Outpatient

Outpatient treatment programs allow patients to receive care and counseling at rehab centers while continuing to function in the outside world. They may remain at the facility for a time during the detoxification process, but for most of the program the patient returns home after a therapy session.

Outpatient care generally makes it easier to maintain family and social relationships and employment or educational obligations. It may be recommended in cases where intensive care or around-the-clock supervision is not necessary and a strong personal support network is already present.
