Need For Packaging

What is the need for packaging?

Packaging is imperative for an array of reasons. It can be used for enclosing and protecting products when they are being distributed. For example the EnvoBox, developed by a specialist pharmaceutical packaging firm, is designed to hold its shape and is impact resistant so that the contents inside do not get broken. Packaging is also used for the storage and sale of products. In the case of storage, the products may be contained within boxes, which will give it some protection against things that could potentially harm the product. However, when it comes to using packaging to sell the product it is all about making the object look attractive and presentable to the customer. It may contain text which highlights the USP, or the recognisable brand colours which tempt the consumer into purchasing it.

To summarise, packaging:

• Protects
• Contains
• Preserves
• Transports
• Informs
• Sells

History of packaging.

In the Ancient Era, natural materials will have been used to make packages for example archaeologists have found baskets of reeds, woven bags and pottery vases which are all examples of different ways that previous civilisations stored and protected objects.

The earliest suggestion that paper had been used to wrap an object was in 1035 when a traveller from Persian wrote that on a visit to Cario, he was sold vegetables and spices in paper when at the markets.

What different types of protection does packaging offer?

There are two main types of protection that it offers; barrier protection and physical protection.

Barrier protection - The package creates a barrier from oxygen, water vapour and dust when required. This is often something very important when designing packages for the pharmaceutical industry. To do this they will often contain some kind of oxygen absorber or desiccants, which will help extend the products shelf life. Otherwise the atmosphere is modified or controlled, which is often the case in food packages.

Physical protection - The objects within the containers may need protection from compression, mechanical shock, vibration, temperature, and so forth and therefore it is the job of the package to help deal with these situations.

How does it ensure the security of the product?
