If you'll do just one thing in your business, you'll virtually guarantee future sales and profits. It's simple, but you have to do it every day, seven days a week. You don't get a day off.
Every day, you have to strive to do something that will bring in more sales and profits.
Now, notice that I said strive to; it's not always going to work. You'll have your good days and bad days. To really make it work, you need to make a game out of it. Work may be a four-letter word, but it's not a nasty four-letter word. There's a saying that work is love made manifest; and notice that love is also a four-letter word. So each day, try to have fun with your business. Try to take it one step farther than you took it yesterday. Try to consistently come up with new ideas. Search for that next big thing.
If I live to be 100 years old, I'll never forget when I first met my mentor. As we were driving home from the airport, he said to us, "Just one idea can make you a million bucks -- just one!" He said it very matter-of-factly; he wasn't trying to preach to us. But I was very excited to hear that. A million dollars was a magic number for us then. It wasn't until nine months later that I came up with that million-dollar idea -- in the shower, of all places. But as they say, chance favors the prepared mind. Ever since he had told us that all it took was one good, well-executed idea to make a million bucks, I'd been hunting for that idea.
Now, salesmanship has gotten a bad rap over the years, due to a few rotten apples. But when you've got a quality product or service you really, truly believe in and can get passionate about, and you've got a marketplace with tens of millions of prospects -- then you can go out there, share your passion with them, and make millions. It's up to you to find those things to be passionate about, though. You're never going to find them if you don't look, and you've got to look every single day.
And again, while the end result matters, it's really all about the hunt. Being originally from Minnesota, my mentor has experience with real hunting, mostly for ducks and pheasants. If you do as well, you can relate to this. Usually you head out early in the morning, in the winter, while it's still dark and freezing. You sit out there in a blind with your buddies, and you're absolutely in love with it. You're just happy to be there with the guys -- so if you get any game, that's the icing on the cake.
You need to inject that kind of thrill into your business hunt. You may not end up super-rich, but at least you'll be striving for the things you believe in, taking care of the customers as best you can. Life is short. I've lost some people important to me over the past several years, and things like that make you realize that you've got to do what you can, and learn to take pleasure in it.
Being happy with your life is an important part of staying healthy and ensuring a long life. I guarantee you, as you get older, the days will start to fly by. When you're a kid, it takes forever to go from one birthday to the next; even when you're a teen, the days seem to drag. Once you hit your 20s and start getting serious, they speed up -- making it all the more crucial that you accomplish something with each day. Even though we have advanced technology to help us now, we still haven't managed to add a 25th or 26th hour to the day.
