Business Owners Must Consider Learning How to Write Copy

Copywriting is a skill that marketers learn pretty fast, because if you aren't able to pick this skill up, you may be out of business before this can be corrected.

What do we mean by the term 'copywriting' we hear you say?

Ok, copywriting is essentially the words presented on the page, be that a webpage or an offline advertisement or direct mail letter, etc. Copywriting is not limited to the written word, as it can include video content, which is effectively the written word converted into audio with visual content included.

Copywriting's objective

Well, it's difficult to come up with a definitive answer, because marketing has so many variables involved. You see, one piece of 'copy' might be to elicit a first name and email address, in order to build a list of subscribers.

Whereas the next piece of copy might be designed to make a sale.

A professional copywriter will undoubtedly understand the benefit of writing top quality copy in order to appeal to the recipient's emotions, e.g. fear, greed, desire, and sense of belonging, etc.

Let's take a look at fear. Take the example of the life insurance industry, who craft copy around people's fear. Life insurance will often be sold through fear, a fear that someone could pass away without adequate life insurance to provide for their loved ones.

Now let's turn our attention to the use of 'greed'. Copywriter's might play on this emotion by emphasising how it is possible for a business owner to dominate their competition through the employment of your product or service. This can be achieved through talk of the euthoria that can be gained through use of the product or service.

The pursuit of desire leads to pleasurable outcomes, and may include desiring money, a luxury home, or some other worthy cause. The person wishes to possess the car in order to obtain the feelings which have been expertly associated with owning such a car.

Human beings have psychological drivers that are designed for us to seek a sense of belonging. This feeling was achieved by early man through strong cultural traditions being passed down via family customs and traditions.

This has now been expanded to include things such as sporting fans, but also includes interest groups such as 'stamp collecting', or 'celebrity following', etc.

Top copywriters always keep these emotions top of mind when writing their star studded copy.

At Local Web Marketer, we recommend that you practice writing your copy with your prospective customer in mind. You will see a marked increase in the overall success of your copy.
