Flying in the face of common sense, the vast majority of businesses we come into contact with seem to go out of their way to make it as difficult as possible for people to give them money.
And, despite the body of knowledge available to fix this problem (the material in these pages, for example) there seems to be no end in sight to this problem.
We can sum up this phenomenon with one simple word: friction.
Time for Your Physics Lesson...
Okay, so let's jump back in time for a few minutes. I remember a test in Mr. DiNapoli's class, senior year of high school. I was pretty good in science and math (please don't ask how I did in social studies!) and I only got one answer wrong on the test.
The question referred to this diagram:
The question was, "What is the direction of friction?"
The definition of friction is: the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and/or material elements sliding against each other.
Essentially, it's the force that opposes motion. And if the motion that the block wants to take is to slide down the incline, then the direction of fiction would be diagonally up the ramp.
I actually felt stupid missing that one, because it was kind of a "gimme" question-the one with an answer so simple that, well, a freshman could figure it out!
What Force Opposes Your Motion?
Okay, so let's jump back into the present. Think about what you want your customers, clients, and members to do as a result of being exposed to your various marketing pieces.
Whatever action you want them to take-whether calling, attending a webinar, or making an online purchase-it represents the direction of motion. It stands to reason, therefore, that anything that impedes that effort can be classified as "friction."
So let me give you some examples of friction.
