Gemba Walk - It's Not Just a Stroll Around the Workplace

The term is taken from the Japanese word for "workplace". This management practice requires the senior management to spend a great deal of time in the actual workplace, the place where products are created or service is offered to customers. The purpose of walking around is to understand the business properly and also ensure a high level of communication between the different levels of employees within the organization.

Many senior managers try to implement Gemba Walk in their organization without really understanding what it is all about. They make it a point to create teams in order to implement this technique. Many managers take the term Gemba at face value and they believe that they have to stay constantly on the move, looking at things and talking to people.
