Every business has one thing in common; they are all in it to make money, and there are many tools available to help them do just that. Being aware of the various ways that sustainable procurement can help a company's bottom line will help guarantee maximum profits are sustained.

The process itself is diverse but can be summed up by defining it as an investment typically affiliated with public policy and covers three general areas: environmental, social and economic.

Environmental concerns are at an all time high. With climate change an ever looming fear resulting from industrialization, millions of people all over the world are employing ways to "go green" and do their small part to decrease carbon dioxide emissions that are posing serious threats to our environment. While companies have Government Buying Standards that must be adhered to, those who go above and beyond to utilize sustainable procurement in an environmental sense not only increase efforts toward a cleaner planet but also increase public relations with those who share the same concern.

The ways in which environmental procurement can be attained are vast. From energy saving light bulbs to building new establishments with renewable resources and recycled roofing material, there are thousands of new and innovative ways to help the planet being introduced every day.

By procuring a stance on an social issue such as the importance of ensuring ethnic minorities have the same advantages as others, a business also has much to gain. By addressing a specific need, the company gains attention from others who have noticed the problem. Social stances are vast, and proper research is necessary to find the stance that will matter to a specific area or populace.

There are two general ways that the process can be implemented. Companies can actively examine their own products and those of their suppliers. They can also choose to discover the practices employed by their suppliers to be able to make guarantees to their customers as to the trust and quality of the products they ultimately provide in correlation with the cause they are trying to promote.

On an economic level, creating markets that are sustainable is vital for long term advancement and adding sustainability to current markets promotes positive change that will ultimately convert into better name recognition and word of mouth advertising that every company needs. Not only is the company working for a good cause that effect thousands, but they are doing so in a way that also increases their bottom dollar.
